The English Bulldog is now very different from the dogs that were bred in Great Britain a few centuries ago. The breed is considered one of the most affectionate dogs. It is loving with the owner and is well suited for apartment living due to its low exercise needs. The breed is susceptible to a great number of diseases including breathing difficulties, skin infections, etc. So, it is recommended to buy a dog only from an experienced breeder who tests the breeding stock to eliminate the risk of hereditary disorders.

The breed originated in England about 800 hundred years ago. There exist several theories concerning the breed’s ancestry. According to one theory, the English bulldog descended from the ancient Asiatic mastiff. Another theory is that the breed appeared as a result of crossbreeding the large Mastiff and the Pug Dog. In ancient times, dogs of this breed were used in bull bating, a cruel sport full of violence and blood. Besides being a favorite entertainment for the poor and the rich, bull baiting was a lucrative business. Breeders of the most ferocious dogs that displayed limitless aggressiveness and seemed to feel no pain during a fight were highly priced.
