This breed has a very ancient history, though the breed of the 13th century differs much from what we see today. In the end of the 19th century when bull baiting was prohibited these dogs had to be changed or become extinct. People started breeding these dogs for exhibition. Their tenacity and strength were retained, but physical appearance changed: the dogs became shorter, with larger heads and not so muscular.
